what is the difference between iwork and Office Mac?

I am a college student and I dont know which one to buy. Office mac is more expensive and it got some bad reviews. but it was word, excell, and powerpoint. What does iwork have? is it better?

iWork is Apple’s “office package” that includes word processing (Pages), spreadsheet (Numbers) and presentations (Keynote). Since it’s produced by Apple, it conforms to the Mac’s interface guidelines and “fits” right in.

Office is produced by Microsoft and its key feature is supposed compatibility with Windows files of the same types (.doc, .xls, .ppt, etc.). Office also includes Microsoft Messenger for Mac (Apple includes iChat with its OS) and Entourage, a mail client compatible with Microsoft Exchange servers. If interoperability with others using Windows is a need, Office may be your best bet.

If you simply need to produce fine-looking reports, presentations and spreadsheets, iWork may be the way to go.
